How to prepare for a technical interview at an SMB

John Waslefsky February 18, 2026 5 min read

If your interview experience is mostly with large tech companies, you may be surprised by how different the process looks at an SMB. Here's what to expect and how to prepare.

Expect fewer rounds, more depth

Most SMBs run two to four interview rounds compared to the five to eight rounds common at large tech companies. But each round tends to be more substantive. You'll often speak directly with the CTO or VP of Engineering, and the conversations will be practical and context-rich rather than abstract.

System design matters more than algorithms

You're unlikely to face LeetCode-style algorithm challenges at most SMBs. Instead, expect system design discussions rooted in the company's actual technical challenges. "How would you design our notification system to handle 10x growth?" is more likely than "Implement a balanced binary search tree."

Culture fit is a real evaluation

At a 50-person company, every hire significantly impacts team dynamics. Expect questions about how you work with others, handle disagreement, mentor junior engineers, and communicate with non-technical stakeholders. These aren't filler questions — they're weighted as heavily as technical skills.

Do your homework

Research the company's product, technology stack, and recent news. At an SMB, interviewers notice when you've done your homework — and when you haven't. Prepare thoughtful questions about the team's biggest challenges and near-term priorities.

Show breadth, not just depth

SMBs need engineers who can wear multiple hats. If you have experience outside your primary specialty — some DevOps knowledge, some frontend skills, some data work — bring it up. Versatility is a significant advantage in smaller environments.

Ask about growth

One of the biggest advantages of joining an SMB is the growth trajectory. Ask where the company is headed, how the engineering organization will evolve, and what your path might look like in two to three years. The best SMBs have clear answers to these questions.
